What is the greatest original song made for a movie?
Music and movies are inseparable. The right song can elevate a good scene into an iconic moment, and sometimes, the song becomes even bigger than the movie itself.
Inspired by the recent conversation of B-Rabbit and Eminem (our most recent Artist of the Week), we started thinking about his other monumental achievement: Taking home the first-ever Academy Award for a Rap song for "Lose Yourself."
It got the Cascella Music Club family thinking about the "Movie Song Mount Rushmore."
Now what defines the greatest? Is it outright popularity and radio plate? Is it about how perfectly it integreates into the narative of the film? The cultural impact? Or is it just an amazing tune?
To get the ball rollling we thought we'd make a short list of some of the definitive tracks that define this topic:
1. The Foundational Text: "Over the Rainbow", Judy Garland (The Wizard of Oz, 1939)This is the standard by which all other original songs are measured. It perfectly encapsulates the character’s longing and defines the magical world of the movie. Fun fact: MGM executives almost cut it from the film because they thought the opening Kansas section was "dragging." Good call, folks.
2. The Ultimate Anthem: "Eye of the Tiger", Survivor (Rocky III, 1982)You can’t even type the name without hearing that iconic riff. Sylvester Stallone wanted Queen’s "Another One Bites the Dust" but couldn't get the rights. Survivor stepped up and created what is arguably the most motivating training montage anthem ever recorded.
3. The Blockbuster Power Ballad: "My Heart Will Go On", Celine Dion (Titanic, 1997): You may love it, you may be sick of hearing it, but you cannot deny its impact. This song defined the late 90s, won four Grammys and an Oscar, and proved that a movie song could be a global, industrial-scale event. It’s as massive as the ship itself.
4. The Cultural Shift: "Lose Yourself", Eminem (8 Mile, 2002): Bridging the gap to last week's debate! This wasn't just a hit; it was a watershed moment. Eminem wrote the song while literally on set (often between takes), ensuring it was completely infused with the film’s tense energy. It legitimized rap as "Oscar-worthy" and became an anthem of grit and perseverance that transcends the film.
5. The Modern Phenomenon: "Shallow", Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born, 2018): A perfect modern duality song. It’s a conversation between the characters, but also a massive pop duet that dominated the charts. It's rare for a song in a movie (especially a remake of a remake) to become such a viral, immediate classic.
And now it's your turn to jump into this debate! Did we snub a Bond theme? Are we missing a cult classic? How about some Disney hits!? Let's build up the list and find the definitive original song for a movie!

I 2 I from A Goofy Movie is the greatest original song created for a movie.
It’s emotional, definite peak of the film, and the song holds up on its own.

There are so many great ones, but I'll start with another song from "City of Angels", UNINVITED by Alanis Morissette.

All great options, but the actual answer is pretty obviously the theme song from the Ernest Movies:

A close but still distant 2nd is T.U.R.T.L.E Power from the 90s live action ninja turtle movies:

I'm not sure if this counts because I didn't know it was written for a movie but, "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls was written for City of Angels (1998).
"Live and Let Die"- Paul McCartney & Wings is also a fantastic Bond song.
