What is the greatest Cover of all Time?
Is there anything more exciting than hearing a song you already love, completely reimagined by a different artist?
A great cover is like musical alchemy. When it’s done right, it doesn't just copy the original—it transforms it. A truly stellar cover manages to be in conversation with the source material, highlighting the brilliance of the songwriting while stamping the new artist's own unique personality, style, and voice onto it.
Whether it's switching genres, slowing down the tempo to find new emotional depths, or stripping back the production to expose the core melody, a good cover makes us hear a familiar song for the very first time, all over again!
We have some legendary examples that prove how powerful this art form can be:
Johnny Cash’s "Hurt" (originally by Nine Inch Nails): The definition of a total recontextualization. Cash took a raw, industrial track about personal struggle and transformed it into a haunting, soulful meditation on regret and aging. It’s legendary for a reason.
Aretha Franklin’s "Respect" (originally by Otis Redding): The gold standard of covers. Aretha took Otis’s demand and completely flipped the narrative to turn it into an empowering, iconic anthem for the ages.
Jimi Hendrix’s "All Along the Watchtower" (originally by Bob Dylan): Dylan himself famously admitted that Hendrix's version was so definitive that it felt like he was playing Jimi’s song afterward. That’s how you know you nailed it!
Whitney Houston’s "I Will Always Love You" (originally by Dolly Parton): An incredible vocal masterclass. Whitney took a classic country ballad and turned it into one of the most powerful and successful power ballads in history.
So, I’m putting it to you all: What is the greatest cover song of all time?
Is it one of the classics mentioned above, or is there a hidden gem, a punk-rock reinterpretation, or a stripped-back acoustic version that completely blew your mind? Let’s hear your top picks and why you think they take the crown!

So many great options. If I had to go with just one it might be a toss-up of two covers from the same band. "The Man Who Sold The World" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" covered by Nirvana are two of my favorites of all time. Going to give it to Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Kurt's vocals at the end of that song is some of the best in Rock history.
