Week 20:

Van Halen

Hot For Teacher

Artist Introduction

Formed in Pasadena, California in 1972, Van Halen became one of the most commercially successful music acts of the late 70s, 80s, and for much of the 90s. That 20 year run cemented VH as an all time great Band. Rock/Pop/Glam/Hair whatever- they cashed a boatload of checks! They toured extensively to almost exclusively sold out shows all over the globe. And although most of their albums reached #1 on the Billboard Charts, they only had 1 single that reached #1. That’s kind of unreal and possibly un-matched!
Alex Van Halen (drums) and Micheal Anthony (bass) are very fine musicians who kinda got a little lost in the virtuosity of Eddie Van Halen (the younger brother!) and the antics (and great vocals) of David Lee Roth.
Eddie, IMHO, was a perfect guitar player at a perfect time in music. Very innovative on the Guitar, he was a remarkably gifted musician. In my world, there is only a small percentage of musicians who hear music in a way most others don’t- and EVH is in that club. He was brilliant at translating what he heard into music, and he kinda made it look easy too. Unreal!
Similar to my previous artist Stevie Ray Vaughan, there will not be a lot of examining the lyrics. Most of the following tunes were written by Diamond Dave- a true character but not much of a thinker!

Most Popular

Jump
Uncle Vin Cascella

Their only #1 single, it’s a fun tune with one of the catchiest keyboard riffs of all time. I suppose tens of millions of musicians back in the day could play that riff- including me. At 251!

Panama

Eddie’s opening chords and riffs are just so cool- with distortion and the structure- good Lord he was so great! DLR doing his thing while E works it into his fine lead. Really fine production when they slow it down

Hot For Teacher

Fantastic opening 1:15. Great RnR.

Personal Favorites

Eruption

This one is basically Eddie sayin “hey, look what I can do”! I’m guessing he worked on it for a while (to perfect his technique) and when it didn’t fit into a song on the 1st album they decided to include it anyway. Good decision- it only cemented him (in the early days) as an innovative wizard. Back in the day and for years and years some of the best local guitar players would do this song- many got really close but none ever got it 100%. Not a crime!

Running With The Devil

Great Song, great harmonies. I used to push this song on my bands- nope! Even my best Band, Runaway, which had an amazing singer, a great female backing vocalist/keyboard player and a great guitarist- nope!

You Really Got Me

Great song after a few hours at a Pub! Love the re-design of the old Kinks tune. Fine performances all around.

Unique Songs

Dance The Night Away

How is this one a little different? Uhhhh… I suppose I can make a case that it’s more Pop-ish! It’s also completely under control- musically. And there is no true guitar lead.

Jamie's Cryin'

Not Diff at all! LOL. The 2 note guitar riff after the word “cryin” is impossibly addictive!

Right Now

Eddie on piano is cool. This is one of the few Sammy Hagar vocals I can tolerate- and I actually like. Fantastic RnR vibe. Great Bass work- or at least it’s turned up a little! And no doubt the deepest lyrics!

Conclusions

The producer Edward John (Ted) Templeman, was previously unknown to me but deserves a ton of the credit for working on 6 albums with VH- a task that I gotta surmise was not easy! Remember the time period people!
Having heard most classic Rock songs thousands of times (and another few thousand times in my head), I’m often bored by it. Not Van Halen! Inducted into the RnR Hall of Fame in 2007, only Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony showed up! Eddie was in re-hab, Dave didn’t want Sammy there. I’m not sure Alex ever speaks- like Teller from Penn and Teller! True Rock stars!
8.8!

Cascella Family Reviews

Vin Cascella

I’m going to go into this one with an open mind. I have this internal monologue that I don’t like Van Halen and I think that’s because I was brought up on classic rock and grunge and skipped “Glam/Hair Metal”. That being said I know at least 7 of these songs so I’m curious if my opinion will change during this deep dive. I’m well aware of how great and iconic of a guitarist EVH is. Not a big Sammy Hagar fan but I think he’s only the singer in one of these songs. Let's see!

Jump: Iconic song. Fun synth. Lyrical content is practically non-existent but realistically this song doesn’t require any deep message. Just a fun, big production glam rock song. Not too much to talk about untill the guitar solo and the 2:15 mark, followed by a fun little synth solo.

Panama: Replace the synth of Jump with some ripping guitar and you have Panama. Again lyrically it's a nothing burger. I’d actually prefer less lyrics, for sure remove the spoken word interlude. Again the guitar solo around 2:15 rips and the bridge is cool until the spoken word and revving engine noises. Another iconic song for the era.

Hot For Teacher: Look at that, another icon. This time replace the synth and guitar and you get an iconic drum intro. The guitar crushes when it joins and the whole ensemble in the first minute is great. And then DLR jumps in and everything goes to shit. The lyrics hurt so much. It’s like you asked an alien who has been watching humanity from outer space what being cool was and this was the interpretation. Maybe pop culture was different back when this was released but it didn’t age well. This is the best instrumental song so far, it never really lets up. Guitar, bass, and drums explode at around 3 minutes.

Eruption: 4/4 Iconic songs, which is saying a lot. They definitely were on top of the world with their hits. I think this one had the largest influence on getting people into rock, or playing guitar at the very least. This is like THE song to show people getting into guitar. I can’t play to save my life and even I still try tapping the part at 1:00 anytime I get a hold of something with strings. This is like the gateway drug to the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai.

Running With The Devil: I think sonically this is more my speed. Just feels like a better put together rock n roll song as opposed to the flashy glam of the previous songs. This song still has a bunch of tiny little shiny things but it doesn’t come packaged in glittery tight leather pants and blown out perms. One thing I did notice about this deep dive is that they do way more harmonies then I remember. I prefer this to the other tracks but I also don’t think they would have hit their level of fame if this is the music they always produced.

You Really Got Me: This is a solid cover that really plays to the band's strengths. They get to excel at the instruments and harmonies and don’t have to worry about writing lyrics since it’s a cover. I love the dive bombing harmonies and all the little mini solos and riffs throughout the track. I think this is the first time I noticed the bass in any of their music. Dig it.

Dance The Night Away: Oh I do know this song as well. Kind of a little more reserved and I don’t love it. The guitar harmonics in the background of the chorus are cool. Lots of harmonies again as well with more prominent bass. This band confuses me so much. I don’t love their signature sound but then when they pull back on the reins I want them to break loose… I don’t know what that means (I figured it out by the end of the review, don’t you worry).

Jamie’s Cryin: My opinion of this song is similar to that of Dance the Night Away. The drums are wild but the rest of the instrumentals are a little more reserved and take more of a backseat to the DLR lead and harmony vocals. EVH still is doing a bunch, but it isn’t the main attraction.

Right Now: Oh I know this song too. Correction to my introduction, I know every song on this list. Finally a song with some lyrical content, had to look into it. This was 1000% their statement song which goes wildly away from their typical message of sex, drugs, and rock n roll. Like I was saying with Dance The Night Away I think I prefer them just having fun and jamming instead of putting together a statement piece. It’s a fine song but I think it kind of gets lost with other comparable songs of the time.

This is another great choice for this music club. Like I have no idea how to rate this band in comparison to everything else. EVH absolutely changed what people thought was possible on guitar. His brother Alex also has some of the most iconic drum sections in rock history. Even DLR has a monster voice. And then you put it all together and…Meh. Not for me. I think the poppiness and glam is just not for me. The ad libs and talking sections are just cheesy as hell. Maybe they were cool back in the early 80s but they didn’t age well.

So I think I figured it out! They are a decent rock band and an amazing “glam” band. Musically they slap and they are in my opinion part of the top two of the genre right up there with Guns N’ Roses. They blow away bands like Motley Crue and Def Leopard. The problem is that the genre just isn’t for me. With all that being said I have to respect their legacy. To give them a score I looked at other rock bands in our club. I enjoy them more than U2 and Jethro Tull but not as much as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Yes.

7.1 it is.

*Note* I saw in 2015 they considered tapping Chris Cornell as lead singer. I think that would have been really interesting, unfortunately he passed away before that ever came to fruition. Not sure how the dark introspective style of Cornell would have melded with the party style vocals of older Van Halen but I think his voice could for sure handle it.

Joe Cascella

Van Halen, niceeee! I know the grouping of songs pretty well, but never went too deep into them as a whole. In general, I’ve always liked Van Halen and have considered it to be one of the staples of the genre of rock that they play. One of the classic greats and I’m looking forward to getting into this!

Jump – This has one of the most recognizable and iconic/unique intro in any rock song ever. Super loud synthesized piano into a really fun drum line. The iconic intro also lasts throughout the entirety of the song which is pretty cool. I guess I never realized how awesome the guitar solo is in this song as well. Unique, technically impressive, classic Eddie shredding which I know we’ll see a lot of. I feel like this is a rare song that can either open or close any concert, and I’d be happy either way. Also, shoutout to my daughter Charlotte, cause she loves this song while in her bouncer! Strong and fun start.

Panama – This is the first song I think of when I hear the band name Van Halen. Extremely recognizable sound again, and distinctly them. They are very clean and smooth with their transitions. I know a few members of the group won’t care for this type of music, but I like it quite a lot. They’re the best at this style of rock. Other bands have had the similar style and sound, but personally they top all bands in this genre, making it very good. Could it be considered cheesy a little, sure, but I have a lot of fun with it. It seems like the band does too while playing, just a very digestible and fun rock n roll sound. And once again, Eddie can shred the shit outta that guitar. I also like the talking verse too.

Hot For Teacher – Okay, now it’s Alex’s turn to kick it off with a cool intro, leading into the rest of the band. I really don’t remember ever hearing this intro in this song to be honest. In my head, it always just started right at the one-minute mark. Speaking of the one-minute mark, this sounds very familiar to The Red Clay Strays playing Ramblin’. We talked about how we’ve heard it a million times before, and this is one of the purest examples of that in my opinion. But if you were a high school boy with a hot teacher (did Farrell have female teachers?), how could you not be jamming to this every two seconds. What I’m gathering after the top 3 most popular songs is that they don’t take themselves too seriously, and they just wanna jam out with solos left and right and sing some fun going rock n roll.

Eruption – Eddie is damn fast and technical, creating amazing sounds. Some of this reminds me of Through the Fire and Flames by Dragon Force. We know Uncle Vinnie loves good guitar playing from his last selection of SRV, but I actually think Van Halen offers more because it’s not as repetitive I feel. Eddie is a bit more all over the map.

Runnin with the Devil – Every intro is so instantaneously familiar. Now this is the most ‘hair metal/glam rock’ that we’ve seen so far, which is what I was talking about earlier with the group not loving. In this case, I don’t really love it either. It’s just a bit too much with the ‘Oh Yeahs’ and the ‘One More Time.’ I also think of the Classic Louis CK bit when he pretends to smoke a joint with his fans and immediately yells out ‘Runnin with the Devil.’ For reference, minutes 3-4 of this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_8PPLd1P3o&list=RDl_8PPLd1P3o&start_radio=1

You Really Got Me – A cover of the classic song by the Kinks. Obviously, this is more edgy, and we have some cool guitar work. It’s not my favorite cover of all time, but it’s fine. I’m cool with it

Dance the Night Away – I am 7/7 knowing songs which is rare for me in this. I’m starting to get that fatigue we often feel in this club. Another fine song. I am curious as to what Uncle Vinnie thinks is overly unique about this song compared to the rest of what we had so far. Fine song.

Jamie’s Cryin – I might go 9/9, let's see! This song feels a bit heavier to me musically, which I can appreciate. I also love the chorus of this one, and it’s another fun song. You shouldn’t have left him from the rip Jamie! Catchy fun tune!

Right Now – Ayyyyy, I knew all the songs. I had no idea how much Van Halen I actually knew. Obviously, their sound has stood out to me for a long time and I’ve been quietly listening to them forever. As a whole, it’s not my favorite of their songs. It kind of has Eye of a Tiger vibes, which is not a good thing at all.

Overall Review – As mentioned earlier, I didn’t realize how much fun this band was having with their sound. It’s got that big, loud energy, and you can definitely see how bands that came after them followed in their footsteps (though not nearly as good). David Lee Roth is incredibly distinct, and the instrumentation across the band stands out as well. Eddie Van Halen is the clear highlight, constantly crushing it on guitar. This might sound like a diss, but it’s not. Van Halen feels like the musical equivalent of Jack Black’s personality. It’s good, fun hard rock that can fill a stadium and absolutely shreds, but it’s still digestible for the general public. Overall, I give Van Halen a 7.6/10.

Dad Cascella

Ok, on to Van Halen.  Being a teenager and in my 20’s when Van Halen was at their height, and knowing quite well all of these listed songs, gives me a former opinion of this band, which I admit was never very high.  Let’s see if Eddie, Alex, Michael, Diamond Dave, and subsequently Sammy can change my mind (and yes, I did know all the names beforehand).  On to the deep dive.

JUMP-  probably VH’s most recognizable song, played countless times on FM radio.  Really good synthesized keyboard riff to open, with subdued guitar and bass.  Simple, basic song sung with echo by DLR, not much in way of lyrics.  At 2:15 we get the unmistakable lead guitar of EVH.  No mistaking his sound, but the lead is too short.  Then they dive into a synthesized keyboard lead, would have preferred more guitar.  After giving it a few extra listens, it’s a good song, and a good start.

PANAMA-  Great rock opening with the power chords of EVH that I want.  Then David with a couple of howls, which I liked.  At 2 minutes, while reviewing the lyrics (which are fairly cool) I wasn’t sure if Panama was a girl or a car.  Then we get the guitar lead (of course), then a really really cool low guitar breakdown bridge which then builds after David’s spoken words (also pretty cool). While the bass and drums sound good, the star is EVH.  He’s doing some incredible, different work here on that guitar.  Again, after several listens, I’ve come to believe PANAMA to be an excellent straightout rock song.  And btw, I figured it out, it’s a car.

HOT FOR TEACHER-  To start, everybody my age knows the video to this song, which not only shows the story of this song, but is also hilarious.  As for the song, finally Alex gets a little star time with the drums before Eddie jumps in.  I have to admit, I never gave much thought to this song, only really loving the video.  But I’ve realized that was a mistake.  This song fucking rocks.  Guitar, bass, and drums are tearing it up.  Daves singing, while never to be confused with other great rock singers,  is perfect for the song.  While the lyrics are funny, the song as a whole is one of their best, a real solid rocker (who knew).

ERUPTION-  Guitar solo by EVH, with lots of echo, contortions, and speed.  Yeah, we know he has all of those tricks in his pocket.  While it’s cool and fast and rocking, it’s not my favorite work of his.  Watching a few live versions, it’s cool with his tapping up and down the guitar to produce the sounds, but it seems so rehearsed.  The few versions I watched were almost identical to each other.  Yes Eddie, you were a great guitarist, but I need something different from you (maybe some acoustic work?).

RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL-  Bass and power chords and DLR howling opening leads to a fairly boring song.  Easy music, easy guitar lead (for Eddie), easy lyrics, nothing special here.

YOU REALLY GOT ME-  Rocked up version of a KINKS song, with a much cooler and rocking edge.  Guitar lead cool, but sounding familiar.  Again nothing too special here, they’re starting to lose me.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY-  Cool opening, but very similar to JUMP.  A Popish/Rock sounding song, though not much different than previous selections.  The harmonies were pretty good.  I guess that’s different.  And after listening several times, I still didn’t hear an EVH solo lead (where did it go?).

JANIE’S CRYIN’-  Choppy power chords with sappy lyrics.  I’m getting bored.  Now I remember why I was never a huge fan of VH.  Really nothing different here.

RIGHT NOW-  Very cool opening with piano intro (nice work Eddie) and power chords.  A big Yup.  Then the band, as a whole, rocking excellently.  There’s even solid singing and lyrics.  The rhythm throughout the song is different for the band, in a very good way.  I suspect Sammy had a very strong influence on this song.  And the interlude at 3:20 is also excellent, building into a great guitar solo backed by the band. Great choice for a closing song Vin.

So that’s it for Van Halen.  Something I really enjoy about this music club is that among other things, like hearing new music and reading lyrics we didn’t know, is listening to an artist or group that we thought we knew well.  That’s me with Van Halen.  I went into this dive with a pre-conceived notion that we have here an OK rock band with  good musicians, an excellent guitarist, and a flamboyant singer.  I just thought I’d listen to 9 songs, which I already knew, and probably rate them as I would any generic rock band.  But the dive changed my opinion, and rating.  Yes, there were some songs that I’m still not crazy about, and yes, they can be repetitive.  And yes, Eddie Van Halen (R.I.P.) has a guitar sound which is absolutely his own, you know it’s him when he’s playing.  I just wish I would have heard a different sound sometimes.  But a few selections surprised me, most notably HOT FOR TEACHER.  And when the band was rocking, especially in live performances, they kicked ass.  With all of this in mind, and because Eddie was married to the ever-cute Valerie Bertanelli, I’ll rate Van Halen 7.2
