Week 9:

Muse

Hysteria

Artist Introduction

This may have been a bit of a safe choice as I think most of this group knows a decent amount of Muse’s discography but hopefully a few tracks will be new to the club. One of the biggest stadium rock acts of the 21st century I hope you all enjoy!

Vin Cascella

Vin Cascella

Most Popular

Supermassive Black Hole

Another banger from the Twilight movie! For such a terrible piece of media, it really had some iconic music. Fun guitar, catchy vocals, their most popular track is a relatively generic rock song with heavy distortion throughout with some elements of funk and electronica. A solid intro to the band.

Uprising

The opening track off of their 5th studio album “The Resistance”, Uprising sets the tone for the remainder of an album that revolves around a dystopian society standing up to a totalitarian regime. I’ll get more into it later with the song Resistance. Overall a catchy tune with strong guitar, vocals, and lyrics. Muse is only a 3-man band (Singer/Guitar, Bass, Drums) but they have such a huge sound to them.

Hysteria

One of the most iconic basslines in modern music. Off their 3rd studio album Absolution, this song absolutely rips and fully embodies their quintessential Muse sound. Huge divebombing instrumentals and sweeping vocals. The only other band I could compare this sound to would be Radiohead. It’s very approachable alternative rock for the modern era that is different enough to be fresh and exciting. This style of music is what helped propel Muse to the level of fame they have been able to achieve while also laying the groundwork for their more experimental and conceptual work in their later albums.

Personal Favorites

Knights of Cydonia

Off their 4th Studio Album, Black Holes and Revelations most of my generation probably learned about this song via Guitar Hero. Similar to Hysteria but just bigger and better! An almost surf rock guitar intro. An epic theatrical bridge (wear headphones and listen to the low instrumentals in the background of the “Noone’s gonna take me alive…”) that leads into a huge rock outro that is one of my favorite instrumental performances in the band's entire catalogue. It’s not Bohemian Rhapsody for Millenials (that title goes to Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance) but that second half definitely has some similarities.

Resistance

A musical version of George Orwell’s 1984. Referencing Big Brother, the Thought Police and the idea that love can be a political act of defiance. It stands on its own as a great song but, when you dive into the lyrics and the context of the rest of the album it brings it to the next level. The intro sets an ambiance for the song while the instrumentals make you feel like you’re being hunted down while the lyrics fight for survival. I’m a sucker for a cohesive album that tells or story or follows a concept and they absolutely nail it here.

Showbiz

The title track off their debut album (Showbiz). I love how this song is lyrically the same thing repeated three times while the music swells for 5 straight minutes. It starts simple and eventually builds into absolute chaos before ending in crescendo. Although their sound has changed quite a bit over the years it’s wild that a song so quintessentially Muse was released way back in 1999! They’ve been crushing it for almost 30 years now.

Unique Songs

The 2nd Law: Unsustainable

Wanted to start off the unique section with what is probably their most different song. Off their 6th studio album “The Second Law”, another concept album that revolves around societal collapse, totalitarianism, and my favorite: the laws of thermodynamics! (I got a D+ in Thermo so don’t ask me what they are talking about). It’s a mostly instrumental song with elements of dubstep (wub wub instruments) which was very popular at the time. In my opinion it's a whatever song that works better as part of an album and isn’t much to write home about as an isolated track. Strangely enough I think Muse disagrees with my opinion as I’ve seen them live and they played this song and looking at a lot of their major performances this song somehow continually makes the tracklist. I guess Matt needs a break from singing?

Panic Station

Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust, meets Bowie’s Let’s Dance, and Jackson’s Thriller. One of the few Muse songs with slap bass as well. Mentioned it earlier but the bassist of Muse does not get enough credit. Fast paced, funky, and fun. Also love that they found an excuse to fit horns into this track…more songs need to blow their budgets and add horns and string sections.

Something Human (Acoustic)

I had a really tough time choosing a song to wrap up this selection since their music is so varied. Their album The Resistance ends in a 14-minute 3-part orchestral symphony that I really wanted to post but Joe denied my request because each part is listed as their own individual track. It’s called Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1-3 if you want to check it out. But back to my selection. I think an acoustic version of Something Human is a great way to close out the selection. A slightly stripped down version of the 80s synth pop track from their modern (once again conceptual) 8th album, SImulation Theory. The album heavily focuses on the 80s pop culture and science fiction. If Tron and Back to the Future made an album this would be it. There isn’t much to say about this song musically, it's a relatively simple acoustic song with strong lyrics that vaguely remind me of Turn the Page (top 5 Rock N’ Roll song of all time). Matt’s wailing voice once again takes center stage to wrap up this week’s selection.

Conclusions

I had a few bands and artists in mind for this week’s selection but I wanted to end the year on a high note. Next time I’ll go off the rails. Over the last 25 years Muse has cemented themselves as one of the biggest rock acts of the 2000s. They blend elements of rock, alternative, prog, funk, electronica, and even metal to combine into what could be described as rock opera. Now for the rating. Do I like this selection of songs more or less than Paramore's? It’s a coin flip for me. Based strictly on the 9 songs presented I’ll give a slight edge to Muse. Merry Christmas!

I think I’m gunna know a pretty good amount of this band. I know they’re huge, they’re very unique in general, and I know they’re a talented group. I’m looking forward to diving in a bit here. Supermassive Black Hole – Yup knew it right away. Cool instrumental intro to start. Very high-pitched vocals, followed by a vocal overlap in the chorus, which was neat. The music also builds throughout the song, and I think we’ll see a lot of that with Muse. Good start, really cool song. Only other thing to note is that was a spacey and exotic song, and I think we may see more of that too. Uprising – This was the only song I previously had on my playlist previously, so I’ve known it for years. It’s a tough sound to describe, but I think it’s just a lot of distorted guitars and synth bass. This is a very theatrical song, which is what makes their live show so appealing to many people. Its good modern hard rock with a large theatrical element. Obviously, the song is very anti-gov/rebellion which has been around in music for a long time, and people can relate to it. It’s modern rebellion drama rock that is loud and very good. Is that fair? I also wanted to check out the song live to see how they perform. I went to 2010 Manchester and sheeesh, what a wild venue and show. I’m not shocked at all by the way they perform, but it really is extravagant. Matt Bellamy, the lead, is a performer for sure. Hysteria – Considering how odd and different the verse is and the heavy music before the chorus, the chorus kind of disappoints. Everything else about this song is very cool, specifically the guitar work after the 2nd chorus. Good heavier song, a little faster paced . Knights of Cydonia – I’m glad you picked this Vin, as it reminds me of the good ol’ guitar hero days. A quick rant about guitar hero before I dive into the song. Guitar hero may be the #1 most influential video game for an industry ever. The only thing that I think may come close would-be Madden for kids getting into football. But guitar hero introduced a younger generation to some really awesome music, and highlighted how a single instrument can have such an impact on a song. It also showed kids the difficult of playing music, and was a good entry level base starting point for a lot of younger musicians. Would my brother Vin ever have gottena real guitar without guitar hero, or a drum kit without Rockband, who knows. Great series of games, huge impact on many kids lives for the best. Okay, now into the song…High intensity building electric rock that just leads to an awesome guitar solo, followed by power overlapping vocals. Good shit. Resistance – Another familiar track for me. This song it put together really well. I did phase out a little while listening. Probably because I already know it, and it is kinda similar in structure to some of their other music. I’m excited for the unique stuff. Showbiz – The first half could be a Tool song. And then you get that heavier faster electric guitar with more aggression to his singing. Muse is gunna fit that profile of a very specific sound making them a niche interest band, which I feel like we’ve had a lot of since we started doing this. It makes sense considering we’ve avoided the mainstream popular rock music we all know and love. I still really enjoyed it, I would even go as far as saying this may have been the best track I’ve heard so far The 2nd Law: Unsustainable – Extremely theatrical beginning, and a totally different type of sound. It sounds like they can start concerts with this intro. Do they do that? We got a DJ mixer blending some electric sounds midway. I feel like I’m listening to the end of a movie where enemy tribes are about to sprint headfirst at each other. That was something. Panic Station – Who the hell does this remind me of? Is it Queen maybe? Or maybe a combo of a few of the great funk rock bands. It’s nice to hear them a bit all over the map, playing different styles of music but sticking with the elements that make them a great band. This is a very fun song, and I fucks with it. The humming into their words before he starts singing (or whatever that is) is like their signature move that lets you know it’s still Muse lol. Something Human – Okay, an acoustic tune, very interesting. Very good lyrics and singing, and a totally different type of song. I might not even know this was Muse if it just came on, possibly for the first time. A good tune to end it. Overall review – Yup, another interesting band that I’m happy I had the opportunity to explore a little deeper. Out of everything we’ve listened to, they’re probably the most capable band that can go in a few different directions, but still have their own touches to each realm they dive into. They are a rock band with huge electronic sounds, super theatrical, loud guitars and base, and overall, really solid. Because it’s still a specific type of listen, I’m gunna go 7.8, great band. I have not had the opportunity to see them live, but that would be pretty sick.

Dad Cascella

Alright, on to MUSE. I am a little familiar with MUSE, having a few of their songs on my playlist, and I like the big, unique sound they make. And of course, listening thru headphones really gave me a greater appreciation of their sound. Looking forward to the deep dive, including studio and live recordings, and reading lyrics. Here we go:

SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE- I know this song, with a cool opening riff, and a Michael Jackson-type feel. Love the bass line, but wasn't crazy about the spacey, out-there vibe midway thru. It's a good song, not great, but I think we're gonna hear better from this band.

UPRISING- Already on my playlist, and for good reason. This is the sound I expect, and want, from MUSE. And I think we're starting to see their social/political views in their lyrics (Anarchy??). After 2 songs I can't quite figure out their instrumentation and what exactly they're doing with those instruments, but it's a really cool, unique sound. I know they're a 3 man band, with an extra on keyboards live, but they sure as hell make a big sound in their music. A big Yup for me on this one. This is the MUSE sound!!!

HYSTERIA- More rockish beginning, turning into a good song. Only thing is, for me, it's a little too commercial for this band, with not exactly that MUSE sound I expect. Though the singing, like most of the other songs, is really cool and unique. The lyrics are nothing new, similar meaning to UPRISING.

KNIGHTS OF CYDONIA- Playlist song for me. Slow beginning that kicks in at 50 second mark, with no lyric until after 2 minutes. Really like the fast pace and the drumming rolling all over the place. Changing pace multiple times throughout, you can't help but move to this song. And the lyrics seemingly really express these guys religious, political, and social views. A little after the 4 minute mark, this song goes to a whole new level, and a great one at that. BTW, could this song have been influenced by YES?? The length and feel of it says maybe.

RESISTANCE- Another playlist song, this may be my favorite MUSE song. After the dreamy opening sequence, this song really kicks ass, with guitar, bass, and drums all driving and leading the way powerfully. It's hard for me to explain why I like this song so much. It's got a sort of QUEENish and U2ish feel to it, but it's so different from those two bands. Great, great singing, some of his best (especially live), with a great lyric in "Love is our Resistance". A major big Yup for me.

SHOWBIZ- never heard this song before, and I'm sorry I haven't. This is a dark song, with a really, really great buildup. And just when you think it's gonna explode, it just keeps building, and building, and building, never actually fully exploding. Which was produced brilliantly and, to me, extraordinary rare. Similar to the songs White Discussion and Dam At Otter Creek by the band LIVE, tho those two songs do in fact explode. Damn, SHOWBIZ is a great rock song.

THE 2ND LAW-UNSUSTAINABLE- would not have guessed this is MUSE, being very different from what we've heard so far. With strings? and Gregorian chants??. They are obviously making some kind of statement with this song (but what the fuck that statement is cannot be figured out). And their distortions and mumbo jumbo just didn't work for me. But I can definitely see why it's a unique song. But it's a Nope.

PANIC STATION- Another One Bites The Dust or 1970's disco, not sure. Not what I want from MUSE, though I did like the lyrics. The live versions I watched and listened to were much better. But again, this was fairly unique for this band.

SOMETHING HUMAN- Wow, very different for this band. Wasn't too much into the first minute. But afterwards, this is a pretty cool song, with soft drum accompanying the nice guitar work. If I'm reading the lyrics correctly, at its core, this is a love song, right?? Being on the road, living a mundane, tired social life, he meets his soulmate and life is much better, right?? He's talking about leaving the music life "unscathed" (which was part of a really cool lyric) and starting fresh, right?? Or am I reading this all wrong and he just wants to blow up the whole fucking world and everyone in it?? Either way, I thought really good song.

So there we have it, MUSE is in the books. Hard to explain what MUSE is, Alternative Rock? Progressive Rock? Anarchists who really are very good musicians? There are so many elements in their music that remind me of other bands, including but not limited to Queen (singer), U2 (drums), RUSH (bass), Michael Jackson, YES (piano/keyboard). But MUSE is absolutely, positively different from these other bands, which is a great thing in music. Watching them live on YouTube they are an absolute force, and u can see how truly gifted they are with their instruments and presence. Would I go see MUSE? Absolutely. As for my rating, it probably would have been over a 9, but that The 2nd LAW monstrosity puts me at 8.8

Mom Cascella

I was really excited about the choice of MUSE. They have a very unique sound, I always know that it's MUSE, a sound I really like. I knew more songs than I thought I would.

SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE- This is a great introduction, I love the beat of this song. I was introduced to this song by "Twilight" (make fun of me all u like, TEAM EDWARD), lol.

UPRISING- Anarchy over Depression, YAY....C'MON!!!!

HYSTERIA- I really like the fast-paced guitar, and the lyrics are very catchy. Another good song.

KNIGHTS OF CYDONIA- long intro, but then it rocks. Theatrical, in a good way.

RESISTANCE- Another theatrical song that rocks. I felt like I was being chased in a video game, but fun.

SHOWBIZ- I really love the sound of his voice in this one. It's soft, but then it builds.

THE 2ND LAW- Where's the singing? Annoying radio sound, not my favorite.

PANIC STATION- Fun, funky sound in this one. I really liked the OOOH'S.

SOMETHING HUMAN- Really nice ending. I thought his voice was soft and sweet (lighten up the Anarchy). Very different from the rest, I really liked this song.

Overall, I really enjoyed your choice of MUSE. More songs to add to my playlist. Besides Elton, this has been my favorite so far. 8.8

Uncle Vin Cascella

SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE: I was a little worried about the title! I like the music/sound/production. Not crazy about the falsetto vocal choice but cool harmonies. Some fun riffs and chord changes. 7.0

UPRISING: I know and love this song but didn’t know the Band. Lots of cool stuff going on throughout: vocals, lyrics, lead bridge, chord structures and changes. Great guitar work. Very cool song. 8.8

HYSTERIA: Just jump right in fellas! Really love this one- they have a great grasp of Rock n Roll. Fantastic musicianship. The verse vocal took a few listens to appreciate but I get it! Absolute killer 3 part lead. Damn fine tune! 9.2

KNIGHTS OF CYDONIA: Ah, a Rock Opera song! I knew there would be at least one! I mostly like it- a little light on lyrics and the music structure is thin compared to the first three songs.Nice acapella! 7.4.

RESISTANCE: WOW! I hear a U2 influence- which is a good thing! Power chords after piano is always welcome- cool structure and production. Then the bass player gets to have fun, show a little somethin’! Very nice bro! Awesome vocals, fine lyrics (cool repeat aspect). Great song. 9.2.

*** It was at this point I had to do a little research- who are the members, how long together, etc…. First- I had zero clue it’s a 3-piece Band. Kudos! Never heard of Matt Bellamy- my bad! Dude is insanely talented. I love his voice- even most of his falsetto stuff! I’m curious as to how he does everything at a live show? Another Geddy Lee? Drummer is really sneaky good, bass player is very good too! Damn, I’m a MUSE fanboy!

SHOWBIZ: interesting to hear the earliest stuff from such a long standing group. Altho longer than it needed to be, it’s ok! 7.0

THE 2ND LAW: UNSUSTAINABLE: like many groups, they kinda change focus sometimes- this one being a fun sounding serious statement with a Big Bang Theory physics twist. 7.4

PANIC STATION: Cool enough song, cool sound. 7.4

SOMETHING HUMAN: Ahhhh, the “I’m on the road working and miss regular life” blues! Very solid production, good lyrics. Did Mr Bellamy develop a speech impediment with that affect on the word “human”? Annoying, sir!

*** I really enjoyed this Band. Thanks!!
