Week 13:

Childish Gambino

LES

Artist Introduction

Oh baby this should be interesting. Actor, Comedian, Filmmaker and all around swell guy Donald Glover started his music career under the moniker “Childish Gambino” after putting his name into a Wu-Tang Clan name generator. I have also started my rap career and the name generator has appointed me “Crazy Madman”!

Prior to college I think my music tastes were limited to rock, harder rock, and metal. Childish Gambino was a major contributor to my discovery of rap, hip-hop, R&B, and electronica. His debut album “Camp” is lyrically hilarious while being both edgy and nerdy, and is one of my deserted island albums. Choosing my songs for this selection was near impossible and I’m still swapping songs while I write this introduction. You’ll see in my selection, especially the unique section, that Childish Gambino really doesn’t have a defined genre. We’re going off the rails here but I hope you can all keep an open mind.

Most Popular

Redbone

With just short of 2 BILLION!? listens on Spotify this is by far Childish Gambino’s most popular song. Outside of a few Post Malone tracks the only other song that has been featured in this club with that many listens is MJ’s Billie Jean. None of this has anything to do with the song itself but it is interesting to see what is considered “popular”. Onto the song… If this wasn’t his most popular track by a country mile I would have put it into the Unique Section. Off his third album “Awaken, My Love!”, it shows a complete departure from his rap and hip hop sound to more of a psychedelic soul and funk sound. Interesting thing about this song, his voice isn’t modified, they just did a bunch of takes and layered a few until they were happy with the sound. I remember people hating this entire album when it was first released and I absolutely loved it. Time has been kind to this entire album with many people considering it to be his best work. Funky, Atmospheric, and weird in all the best ways.

3005

Working our way backwards in the timeline, 3005 is off his 2nd studio album “Because the Internet”. A semi-autobiographical album that revolves around “The Boy”, an isolated young man navigating depression and the nature of digital life. The album was accompanied with a short film and 72 page screenplay. Once again a lot of information before I get into the music itself but I feel it's important to mention all the lengths Donald Glover goes to in his “art”. Is it carefully crafted and well thought out art? Is it overly self-indulgent and excessive? That’s for you to decide. Now the song itself: An introspective, depressing, self deprecating track that asks if his friends are real or if it's just the fame that keeps people close to him. Musically a synth and bass heavy track that has a relatively upbeat sound while the vocals are very monotone. Favorite lyric of this song you ask? “Girl why is you lying? Girl why you Mufasa?”

LES

And now to Childish Gambino’s debut album, “Camp”. While acting on the TV Show “Community” Donald Glover reached out to the show’s composer Ludwig Göransson asking to assist with the production of his rap album. Ludwig co-produced Childish’ first three albums while also producing many of his later singles. You’ll for sure hear his influence in a lot of the arrangements. Tons of strings, synth, and bass. The album itself was an antithesis of how Donald Glover portrayed himself in his acting, comedy, and real life. Aggressive, crass, and at times just plain old rude. Kind of like Slim Shady vs Marshall Mathers. Childish Gambino allows Donald Glover to embody a personality that could otherwise taint his Hollywood image. I might be reading into that too much but that is how I see the character. LES is a song about Childish Gambino being an asshole in the Lower East Side. Cool instrumentals for rap track, like I said, lots of strings. Lyrically he paints a great picture of just garbage people dating by Washington Square Park. Flow wise it’s nothing exceptional but not bad. Changes tempo a few times. The Autotune portion at 3:45 could be off a Kanye Graduation track. Best lyrics: “Girl crying on Ludlow, She still look good though”. How very NYU.

Personal Favorites

Fire Fly

All three of my favorites are going to be off of Camp. I swapped this song out so many times so if you don’t like this song you can try “Heartbeat”, “Outside”, or “Freaks and Geeks”. The track has a very upbeat melody but lyrics tell a story of newly found fame and identity crisis. He’s learning to deal with popularity and attention from people who would have never acknowledged him before while also being rejected by the community he was raised in. There's also a ton of symbolism in this one. Song name Fire Fly, talks about “my shine”, coming out of the darkness, Fire Flies at Camp, fleeting moments like a firefly light. Also touched on the sci-fi show Firefly, Just tons and tons of layers and references throughout the entire song.“No live shows, 'cause I can't find sponsors, for the only black kid at a Sufjan concert”

Bonefire

Oh baby here we go! Just one liner banger followed by one liner banger. Aggressive sound, aggressive lyrics, all gas no brakes. This song played so often in college and still gets a ton of playtime nowadays. I used to think this was so hard. It’s kind of cheesy now but I still love it. More symbolism, sitting around the bonfire at Camp. Just burning every bridge and everyone around him. It’s him against the world and he’s just gonna say funny shit the whole time. This entire song is ridiculous one liners, i was going to list my favorites but there are too many. I’ll go with the niche nostalgic child cartoon line: “These rappers are afraid of him 'Cause I'm a beast, bitch, grrr, invader, Zim”. There was a cartoon when we were kids called Invader Zim, the main character's pet's name was Grrr. Who thinks of this!?

That Power

The closing track of Camp and it’s a long one. The first half is similar to a lot of the album. Lots of one liners (“Maybe if he bombs, he'll quit and keep actin', And save paper like your aunt does with McDonald napkins”) and having an identity crisis but the entire song changes for the second half. Spoken word for almost a full 5 minutes to close out an album is a wild decision and I love it so much. A coming of age story after an album all about identity. And finally a story about going off to camp! A bunch of strings, violins, and drums to set the background for a movie-esque story. Destiny.

Unique Songs

Lithonia

“Bando Stone & the New World” is Childish Gambino’s 5th and final album. It is unclear if Donald Glover will make more music under a different name in the future but this is the end of Childish Gambino. I’d say about half the songs on this album could go into the unique section. There’s Electronica, Ambient, Folk, Hyperpop, Trap, Afrobeats, Pop Punk, comedy bits… It’s really all over the place. That being said, I think Lithonia is a perfect song for this group. Weezer’s 90s alternative rock meets Greenday’s Jesus of Suburbia power chords with a Bronx Tale message that we can all get behind. Nobody Gives A Fuck.

Sober

Off the Kauai half of his split concept EP (sure why not) this song takes on an alternative R&B sound. I really like the arrangement of this song. It starts slow with just the same piano chord over and over, adds drums and synth and then has a full electronic breakdown ⅔ of the way through followed by more layers and a groove guitar to wrap up the track. Lyrically it's one of the few (only?) cute songs on this list. Just a guy chasing a girl. Topical to our previous week’s artist, the music video explores themes similar to Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel".

Me And Your Mama

And we close where we left off. Another psychedelic funk/soul/rock ballad about trying to fall in love. Lots going on in this song. It’s very self indulgent but I think in a good way. By this point in his career he was an accomplished musician, actor, comedian, and television show creator (Atlanta). I think he’s allowed to be a little self indulgent. A thing I like about Childish’s music is that he doesn’t stick to just the 3 minute 30 second song formula. He isn’t afraid to cut a song to a minute or two or let it breathe for 5+ minutes. The long outro might not be anything special in the context of this group but it’s a nice interlude into the rest of the album.

Conclusions

So there you have it. Donald Glover’s alter ego. What started as a side project turned into a Platinum artist with some of the biggest hits of the 2010s. Rap, hip-hop, funk, soul, jazz, rock, punk, electronic… influences from everywhere. I think this selection showed a good mix of some of the music he has to offer but there is a whole lot more. My bias is going to play a huge influence on my overall score. Is he the best at his craft, I don’t think so. Does he push the boundaries of multiple genres and is he also a huge influence on my broadened horizons to different sounds and artists? Absolutely.
8.5/10

Little bonus content, here are my favorite one liners from songs that didn’t make the cut:

In the back of the bush, like Gavin Rossdale's drummer
I'm the boss, Michael Scott, y'all bitches is just Phyllis.
Took the G out your waffle, all you got left is your ego
Fuck Macaulay Culkin, I'm never goin' home alone
I give you money, then you burn me, then you made off
I'm so cheesy, ho, my swag's got high cholesterol
You’ve Never Heard of Shaka Khan? What Are They Teaching You In School?

Cascella Family Reviews

Joe Cascella

Childish has been around for some time now, and I know him as an extremely clever lyricist who does a bit of everything. His videos are typically great and he’s a pure entertainer. I’ll know a lot of this, but very much looking forward to diving a little deeper. Red Bone – I remember when this album came out, and fans of Gambino were pissed cause they assumed it would be a rap album. This album was far from that, but this song down the road ended up being his biggest smash ever, in a genre we had not seen him perform in before. This song is very catchy, and an interesting intro into what will be very different vibes moving forward. Musically it’s clean and smooth, and the vocals are fun and different. The song does not need to be as long as it is, but overall, a fine start. 3005 – This song was my most played song of the year a few years back, which is kinda crazy cause I would’ve never guessed that. I personally love this song. I think it’s catchy and easy to listen to. Different from many rappers, he is as clear as day in what he is saying. You don’t need a lyric video to understand what he’s actually saying which is appreciated. The build that leads into the beat drop at the 2nd chorus is good as they come, solid production all the way around. I also really like the transitions in this song. Fade out chorus into his talk heavy rapping, changing styles and flows. Very cool in my opinion. Les – I don’t know this song at all, which is shocking that it’s this popular. Vin mentioned to me it’s big on tiktok, which makes sense cause I don’t have that app. But here we go. Catchy beat immediately, and another talk heavy song. He reminds me of Lil Dicky with the way he just conversates during a verse. It sets up for cool changes in rhythm and flow. Childish builds his verses so well. His energy continues to elevate as he builds towards a big moment, whether it be the chorus or a change in the beat. More on that when we get to Bonfire. Firefly – Hype song, immediately took me back to early college days. Now this is a more classic rap song. A second singer sings the chorus with him, and he’s flowing a bit more than the previous two songs. This is constructed like a classic rap song, which is ironically pretty unique for Childish. I really love the lyric in the first verse where he says they’re half right. He understands he’s not this absolute killer rapper, but he also knows he does have talent and can spit on any type of beat. This starts his chip on the shoulder approach, which is relevant in a lot of his music. I can relate to that feeling in a baseball sense. Was never good when I was a kid, but loved it and stuck with it and got better. Even in college, awkward unorthodox stance batting in the 7-8 hole, oftentimes seeing a first-pitch fastball that you can smoke, which is selfishly some of my favorite at bats in my college career. The don’t sleep on me attitude. Very fun. PS… 2nd verse, you a fake fuck like a fleshlight is hilarious. Best song yet. Bonfire – I think this was my intro to Childish, which is pretty intense. By far his most aggressive song in this batch, and I personally love it. Are you allowed to say ‘I made the beat retarted so I’m calling it a slow jam?’ I guess you’re not allowed to say pretty much anything he says, so why not haha. Yeah, this song goes hard and we see extremely clever lyrics throughout. Love it. That Power – Some decent singing off the rip, and kind of a new style of rap up front. What an interesting musical piece after the 2nd chorus, leading into storytime. As much as I enjoyed the story, this is the exact reason he is not accepted into the rap community. Rappers are supposed to be gangsters, hard as hell, tough, guns and drugs. Then you have this geek fool telling a story that breaks down the wall of who these rappers actually are. Childish is a nerdy guy at the end of the day, as you can tell by his references of everyone always calling him an oreo (referenced multiple times in earlier songs). And his raps do oftentimes cater more to a white crowd or a new listening audience to people who never loved rap. Then they hear this, love it cause it’s different, but it comes off as a gimmick and doesn’t pay respect to a lot of the greats. I mentioned Lil Dicky earlier, and this concept is very similar to the one he discusses with Snoop Dog in Professional Rapper. That song is an interview concept, and LD talks about his style, and Snoops response is “I don’t get it, so this shit like a joke to you?” Lil dickys response is ‘nah it aint like that, I just happen to be a nutty abundantly funny individual.’ The OG rappers don’t like this funny, non-traditional rap, so it’s tough for Childish to have a place in the community, which seems to be consistent with the rest of his life. The kid who didn’t really fit in at all growing up. The facts are, he’s himself and authentic, and that’s why he has so many fans. A bit of a rant here but lemme know if you see it the way I do as well. Lithonia – I’ve heard this song, but had no idea it was Childish. Unique for sure. You can argue this is crappy pop punk rock music. Very versatile this Childish Gambino, but I don’t know if this is his lane. Sober – I have always been a fan of this song, and he does a nice version of it on youtube if you just search for this song live. I just like the smoothness and fluidity of this song. A smooth high-pitched voice with a fun rhythm behind it. I like the transition towards the end that leads into a very spacey and trippy beat and sound. Nice. Me and Your Mama – Lmao what the hell is this intro. He really is an odd dude and his mind is too creative sometimes. This is why people hated this album lmao. People were expecting hard hitting bars like they got from bonfire and freaks & geeks, and instead you get this nonsense. I also don’t care for the rock n roll ish screams. The last song was so smooth and clean, and now this is choppy and it feels like he’s pushing out and forcing each word. A bad ending to a very strong listen. Overall Review: Childish Gambino is a pure entertainer and a super creative mind. He displays versatility throughout his music. I would say his highlight is when he does more hardcore rap, just because of how witty and clever his lyrics are. The clarity in his words while still flowing so freely is impressive. I will say, I don’t ever think he raps to a very high level. It’s clean and concise, but not overly difficult as far as rapping goes. The more impressive parts are in his lyrics and flows. For the other stuff, he displays the ability to sing really well, and it’s cool how he can mix up genres so much. There really aren’t too many people who can do that like he does. This has been by far the most versatile entertainer we’ve had so far, but I don’t know if I would consider him to be elite in any one area. I personally really enjoy the sound of his music, and I’m a sucker for songs like 3005 and sober. After this listen though, Firefly and Bonfire is where he’s at his best. I give Childish a 7.8, and I would love to see him live. Me and a bunch of other white dudes who like his style. Good choice Vin, this was fun!

Dad Cascella

So on to Childish Gambino.  I can honestly say that the only thing I know about Childish Gambino is that his real name is Donald Glover.  I also know that he played Rich Parnell in the movie The Martian, where I liked his character.  That’s it.  I don’t know his music, his background, or anything else.  So here goes:

REDBONE-  to me, meh.  1970’s lounge music.  Didn’t expect these high vocals.  I don’t want to start my deep dive with hearing the “N” word so much.  Boring song, and not much in the way of lyrics.  I did like his overlapping Prince-type howls towards the end.  Performance from The Tonight Show was better than studio.  Could have ended in 4 minutes.  Not for me.

3005-   Rap song, spoken word song, singing song, all in one.  Had me moving a bit, though of course I wasn’t crazy with auto-tuned chorus.  Good lyrics, he’s quick on the draw when it fits.  But again, nothing special.

LES-   Really good spoken word song, with real good lyrics.  Can I assume taken from real life experiences?  Midway thru the song, spitting real quick, which I liked (did I say that correctly boys?).  But why auto-tune the chorus?  Just sing it.  He does a good job singing, albeit lightly auto-tuned, the part starting with “Ooh girl, I wanna try” towards the end of the song.  He should do that more.

FIRE FLY-  song hooked me immediately.  And you gotta love music mentioning NYC.  I’m assuming the song is autobiographical, about beginning his career?  Excellent rapping.  Really liked the lyrics, much more interesting and clever then previous songs.  And they kept getting better and deeper as song went on.  And its the first time I enjoyed the chorus.  This was a yup for me.

BONFIRE-   Invasion siren followed by very hardcore lyrics.  Very much edgier than his others.  Who exactly is he mad at?  The world?  While you probably know I’m not crazy about the lyrics, he delivers them extremely well.  Actually, after 2 or 3 listens, when I eliminate some phrases, these are really good rhyming lines.  Won’t go on my playlist (I’m too old for this shit) but I can take this song, brutal as it is.

THAT POWER-   wow, almost 8 minutes in length.  Soft nice auto-tuned singing in beginning, then here comes the anger again. A little bit similar to BONFIRE.   But I believe this anger works very well for him.  Was he not liked in the rap/hip-hop community?  It appears so.  Again, very cool, clever, and interesting lyrics (“rappers used to laugh like I tripped and fell, cause I don’t stunt a gold cross like I Christian Bale”).  Along with many others, great lyric.  Song really got me listening, the rhyming lyrics kept getting better.  He’s kind of burning bridges with this one, and he don’t care.  And the spoken word story midway thru about a summer love was pretty cool, funny, and sad.  And I liked the stories background rhythm music.  So along with what I found to be his best lyrics, this is so far my favorite.

LITHONIA-  Yup, that was different.  Sounds a little bit more like a Postie song than C.B.  Rockish with power chords and a choir.  And I liked that he stretched  his singing here (you see Donald, sometimes singing doesn’t always need to be perfect).  And by the way, who the hell is Cody Larae?  I liked this one.

SOBER-  Holy shit!!  Childish Gambino covering a great TOOL song?  Oops, my mistake.  Singing to synthesizers?  Not for me.  Bubble gum Pop song, which definitely different.  But just not good.  Sorry I had to listen to this whole thing.  Ugh!!

ME AND YOUR MAMMA-  Bedtime story music to start.  Wow, drop those first two minutes please, 30 seconds would’ve sufficed.  After this, ok, I think we may have something here. A change happens.  Pretty cool guitar and bass riff with really edgy and soulful singing.  This is C.G? Would not have guessed.  He’s really spilling his heart out from the 2 minute mark til 4 minutes.  I liked it.   Then after 4 minutes, a change again.  Thought I was listening to YES here.  Kind of cool, though a bit drawn out too long.  Have to say, of all the different category songs from all the different artists we’ve reviewed so far, this was by far the most different for this artist, so kudo’s to Vincent for taking the crown so far.

So that’s done.  Have to admit, I was kind of fearful on this choice.  While I like some rap, I’m more of a Harry Mack kind of guy (though I’ve always liked Eminem).  And Jay Z live with Linkin Park is a winner.  But Childish Gambino?  I wasn’t too sure.  But this deep dive I found very interesting.  The man has a voice in the rap world.  Many of his lyrics and rhymes are so clever and funny and angry and hard-core, and so many other things.  I get the impression he was or is not fully accepted in the music world.  Too white?  Name Donald Glover too white?  Not from ‘hood?  Many lyrics show a chip on his shoulder, and I kind of like that.  Is Childish Gambino my kind of music.  Nope.  But I get it.  While I didn’t care for some of our listen, I did really like some.  Though I won’t be driving down Arcadia Court with the windows down loudly playing C.G. music (neighbors would excommunicate me).    Tough rating on this one for me, but I’ll go 7.0 cause it opened my eyes (and ears) a bit.

Mom Cascella

My first foray into Rap Music.  Thank you for being gentle, I’ll call this rap-lite.  Please also put my name thru the Wu Tang Name Generator, I love Momma Lama but I also need a bad-ass alter ego.

REDBONE-  perfect start.  I was introduced to this song awhile back from Joseph.  Cool funk vibe.  Love his high voice, and no rap (right up my alley).

3005-  these lyrics crack me up.  Definitely has a Posty vibe (hol up).  Rap-lite.  Don’t like the drum bang throughout the song.

LES-  another solid lyrics song.  Like the rap and has a good rhythm and beat.   Rugrat tattoo again a funny lyric.  But please, someone, pick up that annoying phone sound in background.

FIRE FLY-  Really like this song.  Tells his growing up story.  Like the girl singing in chorus.  Had to look up SUFJAM, (btw, Indie Folk Rock).  Now I get it.

BONFIRE-  a bit harsh, but I get it.  Love that he’s mad and puts it out there.  Surprisingly better than I anticipated.

THAT POWER-  Loving the lyrics again, though a little too much “N” word throughout.  Then we get his adolescent summer bus story.  Yup, girls can be cruel.  But I got a real kick out of the song.

LITHONIA-  Not my favorite.  Who is this Cody Larae?  Wait, I really don’t give a fuck.               SOBER-  Total opposite of the SOBER that I know.  His idea of a love song?  R & B definitely different, with no rap.  I liked it.

ME AND YOUR MAMMA-  intro way too long.  Then a total change-up, rocking out with a different voice, which I liked.  The middle part was very good.  But then it’s too long at the end.

All in all, I enjoyed this listen, a good surprise.  I really didn’t think Rap was for me, but after listening it wasn’t as harsh as I expected.  Definitely a very good introduction, for me, into rap music.  REDBONE made my play list, and that says something.  My overall rating, 6.8

Uncle Vin Cascella

REDBONE: Not a fan of the vocal choice. Not a fan of the lyrics. Downright bad music. As close to a waste of 5:26 of my listening life as I can remember.

I see where this one has 2 Billion listens- snobby Uncle Vin replies: Good for him. It could be a generational thang. Or maybe it truly sucks. Doesn’t matter. No thank you.

*** although it got slightly better on my 2nd listen (because it sounded a little like Prince), it still blows.

3005: decent rap and production sound. The switch to music is a swing and a miss for me. Back to the stripped down sound works. I get that an artist goes to a counter sound to keep it interesting, I just think it misses. Am I hearing an Eminem imitation?

LES: boring beat and music. Clever rap and style for a while then he beguiles and picks it up. Then that boring shyte comes back. Whatever.

FIREFLY: I like it from jump- great lyrics with a passable beat. Cool use of a duet vocal.

BONFIRE: decent lyrics and cool rap but, again, kinda boring beat/sound. Some fun vocal inflections in the middle.

THAT POWER: good soul voice bro. Ok, switch to rap, I’m still here. I can do without the girls screaming in the background? Nice piano/pace/rap. WOW! Didn’t see the talk/story coming! VERY COOL! Great story, lots of word painting, deep thoughts and real life. Fantastic!

LITHONIA: Very nice job all around. Great tune, fantastic vocal performance.

SOBER: Thanks for adding that generic keyboard bass to that weak-ass kindergarten start. 45 seconds in and “But now I’m so high” repeated 5 times. Brilliant. Good grief this is so boring- I wish I was high!

ME AND YOUR MAMA: Oh good Lord, help me Jesus! 2 fucking minutes of that steaming pile? I’d rather he just rap about his dick. The breakout was predictable and boring. Then… HAHAHAHA- great last few minutes. Total waste of time.

*** Final score: One absolutely awesome song, 1 great song. Stack yo chedda Mr Glover- I’m OUT. 4.5.
