Week 8:
Amy Winehouse

Artist Introduction
As opposed to Dad, my choice of Amy Winehouse songs will probably average around 3 1/2 minutes each. I wanted to give everybody a break. To me, Amy is an old-time, bluesy jazz singer. As you'll hear with her lyrics, she bares her soul when singing.

Most Popular
Back to Black
Good opening, smoky and soulful. Sad story (but get used to that).
Rehab
obviously Amy's most recognizable song. Song is Catchy though.
You Know I'm No Good
Really love the feel of this song. Upbeat music with sad lyrics. This is a self-sabotaging song.
Personal Favorites
Valerie
Fun song all-around. Good to hear an upbeat Amy. I like this song a lot.
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
Cover of an old-time Motown classic. I really like what Amy does with it.
Wake Up Alone
Classic Amy. This song shows how almost every part of Amy's life is an addiction. Some of her best lyrics.
Unique Songs
All My Loving
First thing I think of when I hear this song, it's perfect for a James Bond movie. It's a good song,I like it.
The Girl From Ipanema
Beatles cover completely changed. Very different with a pretty cool vibe.
Love Is A Losing Game
Brazilian song covered by numerous people in the 1960's. Believe it or not, this was a worldwide hit back then. I really like Amy's cover.
Conclusions
So overall, I do love the sound of Amy's voice, it's so smooth, rich, and different. I don't go too deep, but I know what I like. Sadly Amy joined the 27 Club in 2011, dying of alcohol poisoning. Another sad story. I give Amy a 7.8

Going to save my general comments until the end so just going to get right into it!
Back to Black: Fun intro song off a great album. I’m surprised that this is her most played song on Spotify by more than double of Rehab. Strong intro to a broken person.
Rehab: I’m not sure if it’s the time when this song came out but it really reminds me of a lot of Cee-Lo Green music. Joe’s comment about 12 year old middle schoolers singing about avoiding rehab is hilarious… This song was such a hit and the message is absolutely terrible. Fun fact, this song along with a lot of her other popular material was produced by Marc Ronson (Uptown Funk probably his most famous track), dude has been putting out hits for decades!
You Know I’m No Good: This is one of my favorite songs on the list. The 90s hip-hop drum and bass track is so good. The rest of the arrangement is also a lot of fun. Lyrics are depressing as usual. There’s definitely a trend in her story telling format of songs. Just self-destruction in the verses with a refrain about how she’s a wreck. This song also oddly reminds me of some of George Throrogood. Story telling with tons of self destruction with references to alcohol.
Valerie: This song gets a lot of play time amongst my friend group, especially after a few drinks or during the ensuing hangover. This cover was also produced by Marc Ronson, maybe instead of an artist I’ll choose a producer/ ghost writer for a week. Looking at you Benny Blanco. Great cover, falls into the category of “better than the original”. Her voice suits the arrangement so well.
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow: This song reminds me of tune I learned about via from Black Mirror “Anyone Who Knows What Love Is” by Irma Thomas (co-written by JeannieSeely and Randy Newman of all people, wow!). Which after doing some research makes a lot of sense. Irma Thomas was part of the 1960s Soul and R&B scene along with The Shirelles who were the original artists of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. Lyrically the two songs actually compliment each other really well. Irma’s: “The world may think I'm foolish, They can't see you like I can. Oh but anyone who knows what love is will understand” & The Shirelles “Tonight the light of love is in your eyes. Will you still love me tomorrow?”.... I’m now convinced these songs are about the same guy. I may have gotten sidetracked there but that’s the point of this group! I like this song a lot as well. I sound like a broken record but the arrangement is great. I do have one different thing to say. I like the slightly longer format of this song, it allows it to build.
Wake Up Alone: A stripped down original song with possibly the most depressing lyrics out of the bunch. Fun!
All My Loving: A Beatle’s cover with literally the opposite lyrics of half the songs on this list. Cool cover, but I don’t think it serves her voice as well as some of the other covers. Went and listened to the original…I like Amy’s version better but that’s not saying much. Lyrically its a cute song but I prefer the stripped down version.
The Girl From Ipanema: Most different song by a bit, in a good way. Fun song and I like the ad libbed scat section, it’s fun and fits the song well. This song is best performed in a basement jazz lounge surrounded by people with opinions even more pretentious than my own. Is it in bad taste if I want a dirty martini while listening to this song?
Love Is a Losing Game: Wouldn’t say this song is unique compared to the rest of the selection but it’s a good way to end this week’s selection. Another short song with a sad story.
Amy’s lyrics and voice are an absolute force and I think they generally translate better into her live performances. Not that the album versions are missing emotion but the live versions just have so much more depth and the arrangements really help bring the songs to the next level. SinceI didn’t have much to comment on the music itself I went down the rabbit hole of her life. What an absolutely tragically flawed and self-destructive human. I vaguely remember not being shocked that she had passed when I heard about it as a teenager and reading back some of the accounts leading up to her death it seems like the conclusion was inevitable. Years of substance abuse, mental and physical health issues, countless cancelled shows, tours, and appearances, Hindsight is 20/20, and maybe some people just can’t be saved but Jesus.. Even on the day of her death, here’s a quick excerpt “At 10 a.m. on 23 July 2011, Morris (bodyguard) observed her lying on her bed and tried (unsuccessfully) to rouse her. This did not raise much suspicion because she usually slept late after a night out. According to the bodyguard, shortly after 3 p.m., he checked on her again and observed her lying in the same position as before, leading to a further check, in which he concluded that she was not breathing and had no pulse”. Her toxicology report showed a BAC of .416%. Tragic.
Well that was cheery, sorry I got a little sidetracked there, back to the selection of songs. Although it is not my style of music I do enjoy listening to her work and appreciate how influential her work was. I can’t really think of anyone who sounds like her in the modern era who has reached the level of fame she has, and will have the legacy that she created.
7.5/10
Dad Cascella
Gotta hand it to mom, first Elton and now Amy. Real good choices. I know A.W. music a little bit, and always thought she had a different voice, so bluesy/jazzy and soulful. Now I get to take a deeper dive into her music:
BACK TO BLACK- Very very good beginning, I think as much as REHAB, this was a breakout song for Amy, and rightfully so. Great, sad song with a great arrangement. Amy losing a guy to another woman, so she goes back to black (drugs?, alcohol?). It appears so. Really enjoyed this start.
REHAB- Wow!! Reading the lyrics to this extremely catchy song, I had no idea how truly fucked up Amy was (and she knew it). "Yes I been back, but when I go back, No No No" and "my Daddy says I'm Fine" are first two lyrics that stand out. But the whole song is screaming how screwed up she is. "I don't want to drink again, I just need a friend". Another really very sad song.
LOVE IS A LOSING GAME- Loved mom's reference that this could be a James Bond movie song. This soft, sad (what else) song with a 1960's vibe has easy lyrics with Amy realizing love is not easily attained in her life. I'm started to get depressed.
VALERIE- Extremely catchy cover song which was already on my playlist. Good to hear Amy doing an upbeat, faster song with another great arrangement. But I'm confused. With all these sad lost love songs previously about men, was Amy thinking about switching sides. And to me, this is definitely some of Amy's best singing. Great song.
WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW- Another really good cover, Amy slows down a beautiful classic song, with really good heartfelt singing, and really nice accompanying guitar. I'm usually not into singing runs, but she does them excellently. Song is perfect for her (as she's always looking for love) and she does it justice.
WAKE UP ALONE- Old-time 1960's feel to this song. A good song about missing her man shows Amy can write really good rhyming lyrics. But, again, sad that she can't stand on her own and be strong. Good song.
ALL MY LOVING- Cover of a Beatles hit, Amy and a guitar. I wasn't crazy about her rendition (original was so much better). Her runs did not work for me at all on this one.
THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA- Another cover. Good to hear Amy sound like she's having fun with this one. And she skats a little too!! Nothing special, but a nice little ditty.
YOU KNOW I'M NO GOOD- Over 4 minutes long, which is different for Amy. Really good bluesy/jazzy song with another great arrangement. Real good lyrics, and a cool vibe song. One of my favorites, but of course very sad. And what a story. This guy was so bad for her, keeping her down.
Whew, that was tough. No doubt that Amy had a powerful, very unique voice (in our times). Her own lyrics are so sad, and she had no problems airing out so much dirty laundry. I know this is a music forum, but I have to make a quick comment on society. How is that great artists, including Amy and Chester and Chris can go through their life and stardom with so many friends?,family, co-workers, and hanger on'ers, and no one can stop these artists from self-destructing. Amy lived a life so much on the edge, and her death, while so tragic, was so foreseeable. It hurts when we know and like these artists work, especially Chester, only to saddened by their early deaths (sorry, had to get that off my mind). So now to the rating. I really enjoyed the listen, with lyrics. But Amy seemed to only write and sing about sad things in her life. I wish we could have heard her branch out a bit, maybe delve into Rock and Roll, or other genre's. I'm giving Amy a 7.1
Uncle Vin Cascella
Although I didn’t know much of Winehouse’s catalog, I knew she had an interesting sound and great voice. I was looking forward to hearing these songs. Reminder- I don’t read the other reviews, nor do I do any research. I listen to what’s presented.
BACK TO BLACK: from jump- love the beat, sound, lyrics, production and the vocals. Outstanding, nuanced drums/percussion. Straight forward structure which is smart, perfect. Yep, this girl can sing! Great start.
REHAB: Terrific production. Great great great lyrics- of which I only knew some of. Are they a little dark- i guess, but she’s obviously having a lot of fun with them. Maybe too much fun?!? So much going on production wise- I did a second listen to take a second taste- yummy ear candy! I love catching up to this song- very cool!
YOU KNOW I’M NO GOOD: Top notch production again. Fine lyrics. I’m getting a sense that the musicians are having a ball playing these tunes- nothing ridiculously earth shattering from them- just tight and crisp, with some sneaky under the radar items. Bravissimo! Dark lyrics with a happy sound is a rare bird, and this bird soars.
VALERIE: live. OMG- yeah, it’s in a top of the line radio studio, not an auditorium, but holy crap: insanely clean vocal! Ms Winehouse has a very uncommon control of her voice- and she knows it! Organ/keys, guitar, bass with very sparse percussion later on, and gorgeous backing vocals equals another great production. I absolutely love this tune.
*** 4 for 4! WOW!
WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW: I got a little concerned by the very slow intro but it grew on me, somewhat anyway! The curve-ball production of a classic Carol King song also, eventually, grew on me. Another fine vocal- but I started hearing some slightly different tones, including some raspiness, shortness of breath, some trailing off inflections. Maybe it was purposeful nuance? I saw it was from 2011- then I had to do a quick google on when she died- July 2011. I gave this one a 2nd listen. Very solid version of a song I love. Later I played it a 3rd time for the Mrs! Very cool to hear Winehouse doing this song.
WAKE UP ALONE: Great guitar. Another 2011 product. Lots of imagery in what I hear as some very dark but beautiful lyrics. It’s also the first time she sounds sad or at least melancholy. Sparse percussion is super smart. Very cool sounding song- her voice is still feckin awesome.
THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA: lovely musical production but a bit boring. I’ve never been a fan of when a vocalist sings ¼ - ½ of a beat behind the music for more than a few words at a time. Don’t know why- maybe my OCD? Still love ya Amy!
LOVE IS A LOSING GAME: Nice, clean vocal from 2006 but I’m not a fan of this song.
FINAL COMMENT: Thanks Lisa for choosing Winehouse- it was really great hearing her. I’m gonna do a “deep dive” (sorry bro, but I had to go there!) into her production people because I think they do a tremendous job on her stuff. Mostly fun and solid musical performances- I love horns and percussion so this was cool. Of course, I wish she stuck around longer so we could’ve all heard where she went after such a solid start. Oh well! 8.0 is my score. I’m heading to all of your reviews now!
After reading the other reviews, I find it super cool that so many times some of us have the exact same ideas. I didn’t see that a Beatles cover was part of the package, but I’ll give it a listen. One last thing- I appreciate how everyone mourns her early passing due to addiction. Wasted talent, damn shame, etc. I suppose. The music world is overloaded with those stories. David Crosby once said something about celebrating the art- and that it’s entirely possible and likely probable that the addictions contributed greatly to the incredibleness. He claims to have been high/stoned/drunk for all of his contributions to his bands, including his songwriting and harmony ideas. Melissa Etheridge chose Crosby to be the sperm donor for her children! Is that a comment on a sickness in those people? Maybe! But who am I to judge!
